AN ISLAND LIKE NO OTHER
Sri Lanka sits just off the southern tip of India, a teardrop-shaped island in the Indian Ocean with a history stretching back over 2,500 years. It was known to ancient traders as Serendib — the origin of the word serendipity — and the island has been surprising visitors ever since. In a country you can drive across in four hours, you'll find eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, four distinct climate zones, over 400 species of birds, and a coastline that shifts character every hundred kilometres. A morning game drive through leopard country can end with an evening train through cloud-wreathed tea estates. Ancient Buddhist temples sit beside colonial forts, and spice gardens grow in the shadow of jungle-covered ruins.

WHEN TO GO
DEC – MAR
The classic Sri Lanka season. Calm seas, clear skies, and ideal conditions for the Cultural Triangle, hill country, and southern beaches. Whale watching peaks in January and February off Mirissa.
MAY – SEPT
While the west coast sees rain, the east coast opens up — Arugam Bay becomes one of Asia's top surf destinations, and the ancient cities of the north are at their most accessible. Yala's dry season peaks here, making wildlife sightings exceptional.
The hill country is beautiful year-round. Colombo is accessible in any season.

WILDLIFE
Sri Lanka has one of the highest leopard densities on earth. It's one of the best places in the world to see blue whales. Wild elephants roam in herds of hundreds. Sloth bears, sambar deer, mugger crocodiles, and over 400 bird species complete a cast that rivals much larger countries.
