December is a transition month rather than a settled one, and the first half behaves differently from the second.

Coastal daytime temperatures sit around 28–30°C for the whole month. The number that surprises people is Nuwara Eliya, where December nights regularly drop into single figures. Bring a proper layer if the hill country is on your route — most guesthouses there have no heating.
Which Coast to Choose
This is the decision that shapes a December trip, and it is not a close call.
Go southwest. The stretch from Negombo down through Bentota, Galle, Weligama, Mirissa and on to Tangalle is entering its strongest season. Calm water, wide sand, boat trips running reliably, and everything open.
Avoid the east. Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikuda and Arugam Bay are under the northeast monsoon in December. Many hotels and surf camps simply close for the season. They are superb places between May and September, and frustrating ones now.
The exception worth knowing is the Cultural Triangle. Sigiriya, Dambulla, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa sit in the dry zone and work well in December, which is why the classic circuit pairs them with the southwest so neatly.
What Opens This Month
Two seasons begin in December, and both are worth planning around.
Whale watching from Mirissa. Boats start running in November and December brings the calmer water. Unduvap Poya and the Festive Build-Up
The Unduvap full moon marks the arrival of the sacred bo sapling at Anuradhapura, and like every poya day it is a public holiday. Alcohol is not sold in shops and bars, and many Sri Lankans travel to religious sites — Anuradhapura in particular is busy.
From roughly the third week the calendar shifts again as the festive season builds. Christmas is widely marked across Sri Lanka regardless of religion, and the last week of December is the busiest tourist week of the year. Early December Is the Sweet Spot
If your dates are flexible, the first two weeks of December are the best value the peak season offers.
The weather is already good and improving daily, the beaches are open and calm, whale boats are running, and none of the festive demand has arrived yet. Availability is far better, roads are quieter, and popular restaurants take walk-ins.
By around the 18th that changes sharply and stays changed until the second week of January.

December is not a month to improvise, and the later in the month you travel the more true that becomes.
